Love and Sacrifice

Love and Sacrifice Several years ago president John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Upon saying this a swell of national pride enveloped the country. The idea of giving and sacrifice to something greater than themselves brought joy and inspiration to a country. College students and young adults to those in later years of life understood what JFK was asking and were proud to hear such a challenging statement of their president. January 20, 1961 was a day for many Americans that changed the course of their lives. So many countless young Americans had plans for their lives that for some were dramatically changed. The idea of public service was inspiring. For many today, the question may be, why? What is so appealing to give up your dreams for service or sacrifice? What most people don’t realize is that we love what we are willing to sacrifice for. “To love is to want to bring an offering to the beloved. To love is to give. Sacrifice is the choreography of love.”[1](Jonathan Sacks) We sacrifice for the things we love. We sacrifice our time, our talent and our treasure for what we love. The question is what do we love? Most people are willing to sacrifice for their children, but are you willing to sacrifice for your spouse? Are you wiling to put your spouses needs before yours? Are you willing to sacrifice your desires for theirs? More importantly, are you willing to sacrifice your desires for God? “You are to love the Lord your God with all of your Heart, Soul, and Resources,” To love something with every fiber of your body would literally take sacrifice. Is your love sacrificial?
